GLENDALOUGH by Sourav Bhattacharjee

Up there in the valleys washed with

Streaming water of restless rivers –

Stands Glendalough as a memoir to

The history of humanity and culture

When sword decided the fate of history,

And cruel tyrants tore societies apart;

Glendalough stood strong and relentless –

To protect the lights of life and knowledge

The city of ruins vibrates with the eternal

Peace of love, care and celebrates tranquillity

At its best to showcase the beauty of affection

That has triumphed over cruelty over and again;

When you are tired of life – come to Glendalough,

Take a deep breath to revive your energy

And carefully look through the lush green hills –

You will see peace being embraced in the valley

Up there by the sides of the beautiful lakes –

Filled with the crystal clear sweet waters,

Take some rest on a stone by the sides and spread

Your hands to clinch few moments of freedom

I have walked too much and too long –

On the fiery paths of life which makes me

Bleed and crippled. There I look to Glendalough

As my pilgrimage to the heart of life and sanctity…

The monastery and the old settlements always

Invite me to rest there for a moment and…

Ponder beyond what I have achieved over what

I have lost and left over while rushing in life.

Over the aspirations of many such wounded souls,

Glendalough stands over centuries and epochs –

To conveys its message of love, affection and shelter

Where a drifter – like me – always finds his home.
