Freedom from Alcohol by Bernadette O’Reilly

Scan 023

Gracefully
She walks barefoot
Curling her toes in the warm sand
The summer breeze catching the hem of her dress
Long hair
She lived her twenties
Thirties came too quickly
Hit hard
Alcoholism robbed her of her child
Her husband
Her home
She had done well in London
Private secretary to her boss
Corporate lunches, dinners, parties, followed
Glasses of wine when alone in her apartment
After she met Sam she cut down on her drinking
Samantha was a year old when she started drinking again
Tired of the argument and promises Sam threw her out.
Her life of sleeping in doorways,

On the floor of whoever took pity on her
Ended the night she was taken to A&E.
She dried out in an alcoholic ward.
After living in a hostel and attending AA
She found work cleaning offices
A small apartment.
This walk was a walk of freedom
