Read on BBC Radio Four’s Poetry Programme

It came unsought

One ordinary afternoon:

My tinny transistor

 

Suddenly inspired to talk

In pentameters,

Rhymed couplets, which

 

Happens rarely now;

A blizzard of static

Whistles and crackles

 

From the speaker, or

A gabble of voices

Clutters the airwaves.

 

But come again this day:

Amplify the ordinary,

 

Speak in the tongue of Dylan Thomas

Or Auden, or at least

 

Recite the rhapsody

Of Saturday’s soccer fixtures,

 

Or the list poem

Of the evening shipping forecast.
